Pat did not have anything new to report regarding the request made by Medicine Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre last month regarding a racing ski event. As mentioned at the last executive meeting, the group has not made any kind of decision and their plans remain vague. Treasurer: Jenni Duke reported that as of October 31, total club assets amounted to $6,497.68 broken down as follows: General - $611.57; Loppet - $1,719.98; Mountain Tours - $175.84; Investment Certificate - $1,000; Junior Jackrabbits - $1,786.39; Senior Jackrabbits - $146.14; and Biathlon - $1,057.76. As agreed to at the last executive meeting, Jenni will transfer $1,000 from the Biathlon account to a savings certificate, with the interest to be deposited into our general account. Social Directors: Carol Lindner thanked snack contributors for tonights meeting. Carol & Brian will organize the annual Wolf Howl to be held after the December general meeting. Publicity: Karen Weisgerber was absent, but Carol distributed posters produced by Karen to be displayed in various recreation facilities throughout the city. Newsletter: Don Wales brought extra copies of the newsletter for the benefit of newcomers to the club. The deadline for the December newsletter is December 1st. The monthly newsletter is also available to all on the clubs website. Day Tours/Lessons: Pam Ralston listed the next few Sunday tours, the first one scheduled for December 5th at Heritage Ranch, starting at 2:00. She is looking for a replacement as she might be unable to lead this tour. The next one will be led by Don Wales at Crimson Lake. It was agreed at the last exec meeting that the Club should try to offer ski lessons this winter to fill the need for more formal instruction. Pam has contacted Jerry Tennant from the Citys Athletics Section who has agreed to help with registrations, as he has in the past. Pam will do the necessary arrangements providing there is enough interest. Please call Pam if you are interested in either taking or giving lessons. Mountain Tours: Claude announced that 13 people had signed up for the upcoming weekend at Shunda Creek, led by Don Wales & Dick Pawloff. The next trip to Highwood Pass, led by Brian Sam, still has four openings. Please call Claude to register. Bob Marston promoted his annual trip to Ramparts Creek, which traditionally heads out towards Nigel Pass on Saturday, depending on the snow. Claude reminded all tourleaders to collect hostel fees from tour participants at least sixteen days before the first night booking. Website: Dick Pawloff reported that in addition to the monthly newsletter, our website displays detailed and current information regarding mountain tours as well as all other club activities. 2. OLD BUSINESS: Tour Leader Program: Brian Davies first informed newcomers that all mountain tours were led by qualified tour leaders and explained the various levels of qualification: TL1, 2 and 3. Brian described the two-year Tour Leader Program which requires that participants complete a series of courses, such as map & compass, first aid, avalanche training, etc., the first season, as well as two full weekends of instruction, practice and assessment the following year. Brian needs 6 to 8 registrants in order to organize a TL program. Brian emphasized that our clubs TL program is based on the Cross Country Canadas own program and offers excellent training for backcountry travel. The estimated overall cost would be less than $200 per person over a two-year period. In answer to a question regarding the offering of Introduction to Mountain Tours this season, Brian replied that this course would be offered providing that five people register for it. The business part of the meeting finished at 8:05, followed by a very interesting presentation by Mark & Janet of Valhallas new ski equipment, clothing and gadgets. |
